Mozilla Firefox 7 Released | Fake Firefox 7 website steals traffic

Posted in:News

Mozilla has just released Firefox 7 following their new strategy of speeding up the release cycles to match with the competition. With this release it hopes to improve memory management issues that plagued its predecessors. Meanwhile a bogus website has sprung up on the web and started appearing on Google search results trying to cash in on the euphoria surrounding the new release.

Mozilla Firefox

Mozilla has been churning out new releases pretty fast lately,  probably due to the entry of Chrome into the scene which has rapidly gained momentum and has stolen a significant chunk of Mozilla's market share.

The latest entrant from Mozilla's stables to the scene is Firefox 7 which boasts about having improved memory usage compared to its predecessors. Firefox is known for its less than optimum memory management issues and with this release it hopes to improve on it.

Meanwhile what caught our attention was that someone was quick thinking enough to register a domain called firefox7.org to cash in on the euphoria and start a fake site resembling the download page for Firefox releases.

This site does not seem to be malicious and it is unclear what the intentions of its owners are other than to catch traffic. When when we last did a search for Firefox 7 in Google the site seemed to have ranked above the website of Mozilla, atleast in our search results. Not a good sign for Mozilla.

Mozilla better start shopping for new domains coinciding with the new versions of Firefox if they do not want to repeat a similar scenario.  Although harmless, the site could start sending out malware which could be detrimental to Mozilla if people start mistaking it for the real thing.

We did a whois on the domain and found that it belongs to a Chinese guy although that may not actually be the case and we are not disclosing his name here as we cannot verify if that is fake or not. Hope that the competition is not behind this. :-)

This could potentially turn out to be a very interesting scenario and we are keeping a close watch.

Meanwhile Download Firefox 7 from the official website and give it a try. We will be bringing a comprehensive review  of FF7 in the coming days.
